Korean Air History

Korean Air is a Korean international airline that began in the 1970s. Learn about the company’s history and what it has accomplished since its inception.

Introduction

The History of Korean Air traces back to the early days of aviation. In 1919, a young lawyer named Jeong Seung-yeop founded one of Korea’s first air transport companies, Jeju Transport Co. Ltd. The company soon became one of the leading operators in the country, providing air transport and courier services to major destinations such as Shanghai and Tokyo. In 1927, Jeju Transport Co. Ltd. merged with other airlines to form the Korean National Airlines Corporation (KNA).

During World War II, KNA served as one of the country’s main military carriers, transporting troops and materiel across Asia. After the war, KNA expanded its operations into domestic passenger services and began serving as Korea’s primary airline provider. In 1961, KNA merged with several other airlines to form Korean Air Lines (KAL). Under KAL’s stewardship, Korea’s aviation industry continued to grow rapidly, culminating in its designation as a United Nations development agency in 1974.

In 1997, KAL merged with Asiana Airlines (then known as Changi International Airlines) to form Korean Air Lines Co., Ltd., which later became simply Korean Air in 2002. Today, Korean Air operates an extensive network of passenger and cargo flights throughout Asia and Europe. The airline is also well known for its innovative marketing campaigns and for its commitment to sustainable aviation practices
